Sofia Crespo is an artist interested in the intersection of biological processes and machine learning.
Intro:
Sofia Crespo is an artist working with biology-inspired technologies. Her current focus is exploring how organic life uses artificial mechanisms to simulate itself and evolve – and the implication that technologies are a biased product of the organic life that created them, and not a completely separate object. She is also concerned with the dynamic change in the role of the artists working with machine learning techniques.
Selected AI Artworks:
Neural Zoo is an exploration of the ways creativity works: the recombination of known elements into novel ones. Our visual cortex recognizes textures in nature, but the brain is simultaneously aware that those elements don't belong to any arrangement of reality that it has access to. The work explores how computer vision and machine learning could offer a bridge between us and a speculative "natures" that can only be accessed through high levels of parallel computation.
Artificial Remnants 2.0, 2020
This project is part of an ongoing exploration of artificial life using machine learning to generate insects as well as their names and anatomical descriptions. The intention is to celebrate the natural diversity of insectile life, not through the precise, sterile digital reproduction of it, but in the form of new specimens that are digital natives.
